Review: Boogie Nights

Boogie Nights (contemporary drama, male-female sex, female-female sex) directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
The film chronicles the rise and fall of the Golden Age of Porn through fictionalized filmmakers and actors.

Date Released: 1997

One could argue that this film was made possible through softcore elements sneaking into more mainstream filmmaking throughout the 1990s. Indeed, this was probably the most successful result of that. A mainstream film that included pornographic scenes is like comedy-horror: it usually skews one way or the other. Boogie Nights kept its balance like some kind of wise gymnast. The erotic moments were truly erotic — bolstered by real pornstars like Nina Hartley, as the dramatic moments were truly dramatic. Pornstars and pornographers are not that different from the rest of us. Dirk Diggler, inspired by real prolific pornstar John Holmes, was perhaps the most imperfect of them all. They are just trying to get by the best they can. There are not many films like this, or at least not many even close to a story this good.
